Majestic emperor penguin on new US stamp

 

 

Date of Issue – 1 June 2015

US Postal Service has released a  stamp dedicated to animals. This particular issue pays tribute to the majestic emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri). The item was unveiled and put into circulation on the 1^st of June.

Largest of the penguin species, the emperor stands over three feet tall and can weigh more than 80 pounds. Emperor penguins rely on a layer of fat and a waterproof coat of short, stiff feathers to protect them from the subzero temperatures, powerful winds, and icy waters in their Antarctic habitat. Emperor penguins can dive deeper than 1,500 feet in pursuit of fish, squid, and crustaceans ‒ farther than any other bird. They can stay submerged for nearly 20 minutes, though they usually resurface much sooner.

Penguins Digital Color Postmark

 

The stamp art is a stylized drawing of a pair of emperor penguins on a cool green background. The pop of orange and yellow on the birds’ beaks and ear patches lends a regal look to the aptly named emperors.

Penguins is being issued in self-adhesive sheets of 20 and coils of 100 stamps. The words “ADDITIONAL OUNCE” on this stamp indicate its usage value. Like a Forever® stamp, it will always be equal in value to the applicable price for the price category printed on them at the time of use.

New stamps from USPS on Coastal Birds

 

Date of Issue : 1 June 1964

USPS has put on sale a special set of stamps consisting of four items that is dedicated to the Coastal Birds. With the release of these postcard stamps, the U.S. Postal Service® celebrates four eye-catching birds: the red knot (Calidris canutus), king eider (Somateria spectabilis), roseate spoonbill (Platalea ajaja), and magnificent frigatebird (Fregata magnificens).

The stamps feature highly stylized, digital portraits of each bird and were put into circulation on the 1^st of June.

Feeding on everything from crustaceans and mollusks to insects and fish, coastal birds can be spotted along beaches, rocky coastlines, and mudflats, as well as in lagoons, wetlands, and other saltwater and freshwater habitats. They account for some of the world’s largest breeding and migratory populations.

The word “POSTCARD” on the stamps indicates their usage value. Like a Forever® stamp, these stamps will always be valid for the rate printed on them. The initial price and value for these stamps is 35 cents. They are being issued in sheets of 20 and coils of 100 stamps.

Honey Buzzard - Bird of the Year

 

Date of Issue : 21 Mat 2015

Estonian Post has released a special stamp depicting the honey buzzard that was selected to be the bird of the year. The issue was unveiled and put into circulation on the 21^st of May.

There are two types of buzzards in Estonia. The country’s most numerous hawk, the common buzzard, can often been seen loudly circling in the sky or sitting on posts watching next to the road, stalking for mice. Although most of the common buzzards leave in the autumn, some of them stay also in the winter. The rough-legged hawk, a species closely related to the buzzards, is quite similar to the common buzzard but it can be met only wintering or in passing.

The European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) has a special diet among hawks – it looks for wasp and bumble-bee nests and eats the maggots of these insects. Because of this it arrives here in late spring and leaves already at the end of summer. The Estonian Ornithological Society picks the Bird of the Year since 1995.

New stamps on Birds

Here are new stamps  for bird lovers. Croatian Post released a series of stamps dedicated to exotic birds that are favorite children’s pets. The issue consists of four stamps depicting four kinds of birds: sulpher-crested cockatoo, canary, budgerigar, zebra finch. The philatelic release was unveiled and put into circulation on the 19^th of February.

Sulpher-crested cockatoos are sociable and playful. They are also demanding birds that need plenty of interaction and cuddle time. They are smart and known for solving puzzles and other games. Sulphur-crested cockatoos can be more independent than other cockatoo species, so get to know your bird’s likes and dislikes. Adult breeder birds of this species are more aloof than those that are hand-raised. Hand-raised babies make the best pets because they develop a more playful attitude and are not demanding pet birds if given enough to do. To keep these pet birds happy, they need at least one hour of playtime a day as well as exercise time with their owner and several more hours of supervised out-of-the-cage time.

The quintessential pet bird, the canary has enjoyed steady popularity for more than a century. Its beautiful song and color and its charming nature have endeared it to many bird enthusiasts. All canaries originate from the same species, but there are three types, or breeds, popular in the United States: color-bred canaries, type canaries and song canaries. Their behavior is active, jaunty, alert and happy.

The budgerigar is a small colourful bird native to Australia. The budgerigar is thought to be a sub-species of parrot, making the budgerigar one of the smallest parrot species in the world. The budgerigar is often called a parakeet or a budgie and the budgie is one of the most popular birds to keep as pets, both in outside aviaries and in cages in homes. Budgerigars are thought to be popular pets due to their small size and brightly coloured feathers.

There are numerous species of finch, but among the most popular as pets are the zebra finch and the society finch. These species are hardy and relatively easy to care for, so are an excellent choice for the new owner. Some of the other finch species are more challenging to care for and are best left for more experienced finch keepers. As an example, the Lady Gouldian finch is a strikingly beautiful, brightly colored finch, but are more difficult to care for and keep successfully than zebra finches.

Stamp on Easter from Czech Republic

Czech Post is going to release a special stamp to celebrate the upcoming Easter. The stamp depicts Ester Bunny – a bright symbol of this holiday. The issue is to be released on the 4^th of March.

Easter belongs to the most popular holidays in a large part of the world. It celebrates spring with the awakening of nature, its fertility, hope and love. Different villages boast different Easter customs and traditions that used to spread over the entire six-week Easter period. The aim was to get rid of everything old, to clean the house and cure the body to make them ready for the rebirth of nature.

Easter is a moveable feast that falls on a different date every year – always on the first Sunday after the first Spring Full Moon. If the first Spring Full Moon falls on a Sunday, Easter is celebrated the next Sunday. This means that Easter Monday may fall on any day between 23 March

Unique European urgency services number 112

Croatia Post released a special stamp to mark Number 112  on  11^th of February.

On 29 July 1991 the Council of European Communities brought the Decision on introducing a unique European urgency services number 112 (Council Decision 91/396/EEC) which integrates all urgency services into a unique service of providing help, the System 112 with the main purpose to provide overall help in cases of threatened health and lives of people as well as material goods and environment.

The 112 System was operationally introduced in the Republic of Croatia on 11 February 2005 and has following features and advantages for both ‒ the callers as well as the urgency services: The number 112 is available daily round the clock in all states members of the European Union and the calls are free of charge from all public phone boxes, mobile or fixed telephones. The caller does not need to know particular telephone numbers and authorised territorial and specialised urgency services, which is a special advantage for tourists or callers in stressful situations.

By calling 112 one can get help from any urgent service (police, firefighters, urgent medical help, mountain rescue service, inspectional, communal or other service interconnected in the protection and rescuing system). System 112 enables locating the caller of 112, receiving urgent call in foreign languages, initiating search and rescue actions at sea or mainland, urgent air transport of transplantation organs, of injured persons, search and rescue teams, firemen and the engagement of citizens’ associations which with their competences contribute to the protection and rescue system (hunters, divers etc.)

Time is saved, since one call activates at the same time several services, i.e. the operator after receiving a call at 112 alarms and coordinates all urgent services needed in a particular case. Urgent services are not disturbed in their operational work by malicious and repeated calls in situations when the same urgent case is multiply reported by different eyewitnesses, since the operator in centre 112 will block such calls and enable the urgent services to work more efficiently.

A questionnaire on the awareness of EU citizens of the universal European number 112 for urgent cases, which the European Commission conducted in January 2014, showed that 65% of the participants in the Republic of Croatia are informed about the number 112 and its purpose, which is significantly higher than the EU average (EU 28, 41%.)

Children's World - Pets

Croatian Post issued  four new commemorative postage stamps from the series "Children's world - pets"  on 19th February 2015  .

These postage stamps  presents four types of birds:

 

Žutokukmasti cockatoo  The homeland of this beautiful bird is Australia, where he lives in flocks of hundreds of birds. Australia has banned the export of all native species of animals, as well as a cockatoo, because the specimens that are grown around the world for the most part legally exported birds or their descendants. Of all the types of cockatoos - and there are twenty - žutokukmasti is the most common pet. Easy to adapt to human society, but must not be allowed to bind with one person. If you decide that cockatoo be your pet, you should make, and if possible, find a breeder that will help in his upbringing.

Canary  The homeland is the canary Canary Islands, which is not named after the canary, but each dog, lat. canis . Today, with the most common parakeet tigress feathered pet, a number of mutations per color, body shape, size and manner of singing holds first place in the world among all the birds. It is interesting that a canary learns the song of the moment is still in the egg and continue throughout life. One of the interesting facts related to them is that we include them in the 19th century miners carried with him into the mine, where they served as "human sensors". Do you like birdsong and if you want to have a piece of nature in your home, you will not go wrong by getting a canary.

 

Papigica Tigress  Tigress is the best known representative of the family parrot and the most common pet in the world. Her homeland of Australia, where they live in large flocks. Want to tiger for a pet, you need to consider in advance how much she can devote, because it takes at least 2-3 hours a day. Few will it teach you, you little it; are very intelligent and very willing to play, as well as to mimic our speech. His little friend give a short and simple name and it will soon begin to pronounce. Get you a tigress for a pet, you will get 10-15 years of fun and enjoyment in her society.

 

The Australian zebra finches  Would you like finches for pets, it is best to take a couple you will be able to experience their cheerful chirping, wooing males, nest, and if a little luck, and squealing recently hatched bird. As a place to nest at home, it is best to set up a wooden box measuring 12x12x15 cm with a round hole of 3 cm.When the nest is made, the excess material to be removed, because the male bury eggs. Sitting on them mainly female, only occasionally replaced male to female drink and feed and flexing. Get you finches for pets, you will not regret because you will have an unforgettable experience.

Gujpex 2015, 13th Zonal Level Philatelic Exhibition at Ahmedabad - 24th - 27th March 2015

 

Gujpex-2015, 13th Zonal Level Philatelic Exhibition will be held from 24th to 27th March 2015 at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial, Opp. Circuit House, Shahibaug, Ahmedabad – 380 004. A Press Conference was organized by Gujarat Postal Circle on 20th February 2015 at Conference Room of Chief Postmaster General’s Office, Ahmedabad to launch the Prospectus and website of Gujpex-2015.

Brig. Sanjeev Thapar, Chief Postmaster General, Gujarat Postal Circle launched the Prospectus and Website of Gujpex-2015 at the Press Conference and briefed about the exhibition.  The Exhibition is open to all Philatelists residing in Gujarat State and Union Territory of Diu, Daman and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The exhibitor desiring to participate in Gujpex 2015 should register him/herself at the exhibition’s official website www.gujpex.com and have to complete procedure of submitting online entry form. The scanned images of relevant documents, viz. awards certificate, birth certificates (for youth group), identity proof, address proof etc. as mentioned on the online web page should also be uploaded along with the passport size photograph of the exhibitor. Application Number would be sent to the email id and mobile phone number provided in the application. Prospectus of the exhibition is available at the website www.gujpex.com

The last date for submitting the application is 7th March 2015.

Special Cover on 10th Raising Day of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) released on 21st January 2015

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) celebrated its 10th Raising Day on 21st January 2015.  The Raising Day function was held at Kothari Auditorium, DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi. On the occasion Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh released a Special Cover marking the 10th Raising Day of NDRF in presence of Shri Vasumitra, Chief Postmaster General, Delhi Circle, the Additional Principal Secretary, PMO, Dr. P.K. Mishra and the Director General, NDRF, Shri O.P. Singh.

The Disaster Management Act has made the statutory provisions for constitution of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for the purpose of specialized response to natural and man-made disasters. Accordingly, The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was raised on January 19, 2006, constituted with 8 battalions (2 battalions each from BSF, CRPF, ITBP and CISF). The NDRF is capable of responding to any type of disaster in the country and abroad. It is strategically deployed across the nation as per the vulnerability profile of the country. Apart from rescue and relief operations, NDRF is also active in community capacity building for disaster response and imparting training to State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
At present, National Disaster Response Force is having strength of 10 battalions and Each NDRF battalion consists of 1149 personnel. Each battalion provides 18 self-contained specialist searches and rescue teams of 45 personnel each including engineers, technicians, electricians, dog squads and medical/paramedics. All the ten battalions are being equipped and trained to combat all natural disasters including four battalions in combating radiological, nuclear, biological and chemical disasters. Two more battalions have been sanctioned and will come from SSB.

New stamp on UNICEF

 

Date of Issue  : 5 February 2015

Here is a beautiful stamp issued on UNICEF. The design of the stamp is excellent.  Magyar Posta has issued a special stamp to welcome UNICEF operating in Hungary for forty years. On the stamp design a graphic work entitled “Children’s Tree” can be seen, while on the first day cover the main aims of UNICEF are displayed. The stamp was released on 5 February 2015.

 

 

In the history of mankind World War II was the greatest armed conflict, in which 70 nations took part and more than 62 million civilians and soldiers died. Among the survivors there were millions of orphaned and severely traumatised children. In that world the victorious and the defeated both were in need of support.

Maurice Pate – who later became the first Executive Director of UNICEF – wrote the following to the US Secretary of State in his letter: “I need 100 million dollars to give 6 million children a glass of milk and a piece of bread.” UNICEF was launched with this sentence. Its aim was to help freezing, starving and sick children, including Hungarian children, in post-war Europe.

However, following foundation they had to face the fact that it is not only wars that cause pain to children. All children in the world must receive the fundamental rights they are entitled to: the right to protection, health, education and equality. In 1965 UNICEF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “the promotion of brotherhood among the nations”. UNICEF fights for these rights in Hungary as well.

According to global surveys there are between 500 million and 1.5 billion children who have suffered from some sort of violence. According to some estimates every tenth child is affected by violence in Hungary. UNICEF believes that child abuse could be prevented completely, and all children exposed to danger have the right to protection and must be given appropriate assistance. UNICEF launches campaigns in Hungary to help both adults and children understand children’s rights.

Threatened Pataxo Indian Tribe of Brazil Celebrates Supreme Court Decision

The Pataxo Ha-Ha-Hae Indian tribe, residing in Brazil, has been allowed by a Supreme Court verdict to live undisturbed in their area. The court has asked the ranchers illegally occupying the area and their indigenous territory to leave the region.

The decision by Brazil's Supreme Court came after a long judicial battle, the Survival International organisation informed. For decades, the Pataxo of Bahia state has been subjected to violent conflict by the ranchers and other poachers illegally occupying the area.

They have been pushing to be able to live undisturbed on their ancestral land, a right guaranteed to them by Brazil's constitution and by international law. According to Survival International, State Deputy Padre Ton emphasised that this land is for the Indians, "chased away and evicted by the violence they suffered".

The history of the colonisation of Bahia's southern region is a tragic tale of tremendous violence exerted against the Indian inhabitants.Time and again the indigenous groups residing in the region have been subjected to threats, affronts, challenges and aggressions of hired thugs.

Black Swan on new stamp from New Zealand

 

Date of Issue : 2 February 2015

New Zealand Post launched a special stamp to mark World Wetlands Day. This year, the stamp features the black swan. The issue was released on the 2nd of February.

The black swan (Cygnus atratus), also known as the kakīānau, is one of the most common waterfowl found in New Zealand, with a population of approximately 50,000 across the country. Mainly found on lakes, estuaries, harbours and freshwater ponds, black swans are a legal game bird in most parts of New Zealand.

The black swan is covered in jet black feathers, with striking white feathers visible beneath the wings of adult swans The black swan has a bright red bill with a white band, red eyes and light grey legs. There is little difference between the male and female birds, though the females tend to be smaller. Black swans are slow, yet graceful swimmers on the water and tend to be territorial on land.

The nesting season for black swans generally occurs in the winter months from around July, with colonial nesting beginning around September through to November. Black swans are mostly monogamous and pair for life, usually nesting in the same spot each year, tending and rebuilding their nest as necessary. A typical breeding season will yield between four and eight eggs, with an incubation period of around 40 days. Black swans defend their nests, aggressively attacking any intruder with their wings and beaks.

The Game Bird Habitat Stamp programme was set up to raise funds – from the sale of the game bird hunting licences, stamp collection and related products – for projects aimed at protecting and enhancing wetlands and game bird and other wildlife habitat.

Cover from Chauri Chaura

Chauri Chaura is situated at State Highway between Gorakhpur and Deoria, 30.5 kilometres  from Gorakhpur. Chauri Chaura came into prominence in 1922 when its inhabitants whole-heartedly participated in the Non-co-operation movement started by Gandhi and was scene of famous Chauri Chaura incident, when, after the police had shot and killed several demonstrators, a police chowki (station) was set on fire by a mob of angry citizens, killing 22 policemen inside. The incident took place on 4th Feb 1922.

34th Racing Pigeon Olympiad, Budapest

 

Magyar Posta commemorated  the 34th racing pigeon Olympiad organized in Budapest between 15–18 January 2015 by issuing a commemorative stamp block and a set with two denominations. The issue was released on the 16^th of January.

On one of the denominations of the numbered block containing two stamp designs of the same size but of different orientation, a former Olympic champion racing pigeon of Hungarian breed named Jr Villám(Lightening Jr) can be seen, while on the other stamp design a moment of a pigeon toss is captured, and this scene extends into the frame design of the block.

On the denominations of the set former Olympic champion pigeons of Hungarian breed can be seen, as well as a famous sight of Budapest. On the stamp design of a face value of HUF 115 First Lady and Heroes’ Square, while on the HUF 145 denomination Mr Villám and a part of the Fishermen’s Bastion can be seen. On the edge of the sheets containing 50 stamp designs, at the top and at the bottom, the logo of the 34th Racing Pigeon Olympiad is repeated.

The Hungarian Racing Pigeon Sports Federation of a history of more than 130 years is organizing the 34th Racing Pigeon Olympiad. The last time this prestigious event was held in Hungary was in 1975, so after 40 years the world’s pigeon breeders gathered in Hungary again. The Racing Pigeon Olympiad is also an exhibition and fair, in the scope of which professional programmes and conferences are organised, and it offers points of interest to the general public too. Delegates from 50 countries attended the Olympiad. Racing pigeon breeding is a worldwide sport and hobby.

Unique Conservation stamps with a twist from New Zealand

Hi !

I am  sharing here new unique stamps on endangered Sea birds, issued by New Zealand Post. Our distinguished Reader Corinne Pegler from New Zealand shares here  information about these  stamps. Thank you very much Corinne for the information . Each of the five stamps features an image of the endangered bird with a smaller silhouette printed in thermo chromic ink. If you warm up face of the stamp (with your finger, for example), the birds turn translucent and disappear, mimicking the decline of the populations of these creatures.

New Zealand’s unique marine environment is home to a diverse range of seabirds, giving New Zealand the title of ‘seabird capital of the world’. Five of our most endangered seabirds are featured on this unique stamp issue that uses thermo chromic ink to reflect the disappearing nature of these precious birds.

Of the approximately 10,000 known species of birds, seabirds only make up a very small fraction with just approximately 360 in the world. Seabirds are classified as birds that almost exclusively feed on food from the ocean, and while some thrive in New Zealand with populations in the high thousands (if not millions), other birds are not so lucky.

Featured in this special conservation issue are five breeds of seabirds found in New Zealand – the Antipodean Albatross, the New Zealand Fairy Tern, the Chatham Island Shag, the Black-billed Gull and the Chatham Island Taiko. All five species are considered ‘nationally critical’. According to the Department of Conservation, this means that there are either less than 250 mature breeding pairs or there has been more than a 70% decline in their population over ten years or three generations (whichever is longer).

Threats to these species and other endangered seabirds include introduced predators, modification of seabird breeding habits and marine pollutants that enter the marine environment.

 

 

Endangered Seabirds

  80c – Antipodean Albatross

The Antipodean albatross is a large albatross that breeds almost exclusively on the Auckland and Antipodes Islands. They are masters of low-energy flying and forage over the contintental shelf edge and deep water areas.

$1.40 – New Zealand Fairy Tern

The New Zealand Fairy Tern is the most threatened of New Zealand’s birds. Its tiny population of around 50 birds is seriously threatened by introduced predators, human disturbance, habitat loss and coastal development.

$2.00 – Chatham Island Shag

Restricted to the Chatham Islands as their name suggests, this large black and white shag, is a conspicuous bird along the rocky coastlines. Colonies and roost sites are located on rocky headlands and islets and there is one colony in the Te Whanga Lagoon.

Black-billed Gulls are strongly colonial and breed predominantly on braided rivers from the coast to the headwaters. The species is found throughout New Zealand but is most common east of the southern divide in the South Island and in Southland.

$3.00 – Chatham Island Taiko

One of the world’s rarest seabirds, the Chatham Island Taiko’s population is estimated at less than 200. The only known breeding site is at the southern end of main Chatham Island. The bird was known from only one specimen captured at sea in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean in 1867.

THÜBRIA 2014

A philatelic exhibition will be held  from October 3rd to October 5th 2014  in Greiz, a small town in Germany (Thuringia). The chairman of the exhibition is Mr. Lothar Fritz, chairman of the German Collector Group from the  town  of Greiz . More as 70 exhibits in more as 400 frames will be shown from exhibitors of Germany and other countries from Europe. During THÜBRIA will be held a meeting and a special show with exhibits of the German Collector Group ArGe BRAZIL(collectors of brazilian philately),a meeting of the German Collector Group ArGe Hungary (collectors of hungarian philately) and a meeting of the German Collector Group ArGe Czechoslovakia (collectors of chzechoslovakian philately).

Mr. Wolfgang Beyer as Vice Chairman of the German Collector Group ArGe Zoologie (collectors of philatelic items about animals) and contributor of Rainbow Stamp Club will  show a presentation
of Indian Philately with books (from Mr. Madan Middha and Mr. Abhai Mishra ),modern stamps  and miniature sheets from India,Customized sheetlets ,special covers and Meghdoot postcards.
