Happy Easter  !!

image image

Easter belongs to the most popular holidays in a large part of the world. It celebrates spring with the awakening of nature, its fertility, hope and love. Different villages boast different Easter customs and traditions that used to spread over the entire six-week Easter period. The aim was to get rid of everything old, to clean the house and cure the body to make them ready for the rebirth of nature.

image

Easter is a moveable feast that falls on a different date every year - always on the first Sunday after the first Spring Full Moon. If the first Spring Full Moon falls on a Sunday, Easter is celebrated the next Sunday. This means that Easter Monday may fall on any day between 23 March and 26 April.

image  image image

On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. It is typically the most well-attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches.

Christians believe, according to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Thai Pongal – Farmers’ Festival

image

Makar Sankranti also known as Pongal is a major harvest festival celebrated in various parts of India and other countries by Hindu communities. According to the lunar calendar, when the sun moves from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn or from Dakshinayana to Uttarayana, in the month of Poush in mid-January, it commemorates the beginning of the harvest season and cessation of the northeast monsoon in South India. The movement of the earth from one zodiac sign into another is called Sankranti and as the Sun moves into the Capricorn zodiac known as Makar in Hindi, this occasion is named as Makar Sankranti in the Indian context. It is one of the few Hindu Indian festivals which are celebrated on a fixed date i.e. 14th January every year.

image

Makar Sankranti, apart from a harvest festival is also regarded as the beginning of an auspicious phase in Indian culture. It is said as the 'holy phase of transition'. It marks the end of an inauspicious phase which according to the Hindu calendar begins around mid-December. It is believed that any auspicious and sacred ritual can be sanctified in any Hindu family, this day onwards. Scientifically, this day marks the beginning of warmer and longer days compared to the nights. In other words, Sankranti marks the termination of winter season and beginning of a new harvest or spring season.

All over the country, Makar Sankranti is observed with great fanfare. However, it is celebrated with distinct names and rituals in different parts of the country. In the states of northern and western India, the festival is celebrated as the Sankranti day with special zeal and fervor. The importance of this day has been signified in the ancient epics like Mahabharata also. So, apart from socio-geographical importance, this day also holds a historical and religious significance. As, it is the festival of Sun God and he is regarded as the symbol divinity and wisdom, the festival also holds an eternal meaning to it.

Korea Post is to issue a new series of commemorative stamps on occasion of the 60th anniversary of Baekje Cultural Festival that will be held from September 26 to October 5, 2014 for 10 days in and around Buyeo-gun and Gongju city in Chungcheongnam-do.

Initiated by local residents, the Baekje Cultural Festival, now stretching beyond its local boundaries, has become a world cultural festival over the last 60 years. The festival is also a reminder of the cultural power of the Kingdom which had developed and spread its ancient culture to neighboring countries through international exchange.

The abundance of endless rice fields provided the basis of Baekje’s rich culture and created “the Great Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje” regarded as the essence of Baekje’s culture, “Gold Diadem Ornaments” resembling a blazing flame, “the Five-story Stone Pagoda at Jeongnimsa Temple Site” boasting a one-of-a-kind and refined beauty and “the Rock-carved Buddha Triad” carved with a simple and genial smile.
