World Environment Day 2015 - 'Seven Billion Dreams; One Planet; Consume with Care'

image

image image

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on 5th June to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth. The theme for 2015 is how the well-being of humanity, the environment and economies ultimately depends on the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources. Evidence is building that people are consuming far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably provide.

Cover prepared by Sanjeev Jain - Dehradun

Many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development. By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our way of life. Living well within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future.

You can save the world !

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change -- IPCC of U.N. has monitored and predicted the temperature of the earth's surface and the sea water and has come to the conclusion that in the Twenty First Century (2000-2100) the average temperature of the earth's surface will increase by 1.1 to 6.4 Degree Celsius, causing global warming that will result in a risk in the sea level. It is also expected that there will be drastic changes in the weather, a change in the number and frequency of aerial water droplets and agricultural products and an expansion in disease carriers. Everyone can help to alleviate the problems related to global warming by using simple methods -- energy conservation, avoiding using plastic bags, decreasing the amount of waste and the use of fuel, avoiding using instruments that contain the CFCs which cause greenhouse effect, and planting more trees.

Save the Baltic Seal

image

Date of Issue : 12 March 2015

The beautiful Souvenir sheet shown above was issued by Estonia Post on 12th March 2015 featuring ‘Protection of the Baltic Sea Natural Environment’. The FDC of this issue is so wonderful. With this issue a Maximum card was also issued. This is the perfect item for collection on environment, nature, sea and mammals. This issue highlights how the intense ship traffic in Baltic Sea has affected the sea life.

The Baltic Sea is an inland sea of the Baltic Ocean, which surrounds Estonia from the north and the west. The other countries of the Baltic Sea are Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The Baltic States are developed industrial countries and the settlements’ and industrial enterprises’ effluent flow into the sea from large areas. A lot of nutrients used in agriculture and forestry flow into the sea and as a result of this the coastal and maritime flora has started to thrive out of proportion. For many organisms it is difficult to adapt water that contains a lot of nutrients and as result they fall ill and finally die. Recently “flowering of the water” or mass gadding of the blue green algae has increased.

image

The biggest amount of toxic substances build up at the end of the feeding chain. Seals, who mainly eat fish, are at the end of feeding chain and due to the environmental toxic substances numerous female animals have lost their power of breeding. The intense maritime traffic on the Baltic Sea is a great source of danger, accounting for nearly 15 percent of the maritime traffic of all the seas of the world. One of the channels of pollution is nitrogen that gets into the maritime environment due to the exhaust gases of ship traffic. More environmental-friendly fuels and technologies would reduce ship effluents by up to 80 percent.

image

General growth of ship traffic and explosively increased transport of crude oil additionally bring considerable danger of a collision of tanker ships. Many oil tankers moving on the Baltic Sea are still single-bottomed as before. During the past twenty years there have been dozens of accidents involving ships and oil pollution. Oil pollution on the seaboard can preserve for decades and its most visible consequences are oil on the surface of the sea: birds and seals suffocate and the opportunity that they do not die is reduced by the deterioration of their movement. But purposeful protection makes it possible to keep the Baltic Sea relatively clean and viable, to preserve the versatility of to its natural environments and to restore the quality of the environment and of the waters.

Hong Kong Post issued a set of six stamps and two sheetlets with the theme "Weather Phenomena", one HKD20 sheetlet is printed with lithography plus a lenticular effect to show the trajectory of Typhoon Vicente. The stamp sheetlet showcases the satellite image of Typhoon Vicente when it approached Hong Kong in July 2012 and the Hurricane Signal No. 10 was issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

"Weather Phenomena" Special Stamps

Situated in the subtropical zone, Hong Kong has a humid climate with fog and drizzle in spring. Summer, also a typhoon season, is hot with occasional showers and thunderstorms. Autumn normally brings pleasant breezes, plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. Winter becomes cloudier, with occasional cold fronts crossing the territory, bringing frost at times. In collaboration with the Hong Kong Observatory, Hongkong Post introduces seven common weather phenomena in Hong Kong under the theme of “Weather Phenomena” to help the public understand the changes in our weather.

image

$1.70

A rainbow is an optical phenomenon. Sunlight is composed of light of different wavelengths. When there are water droplets in the atmosphere, sunlight gets refracted and reflected in them and a rainbow is formed. The stamp illustrates a double rainbow in the sky over the urban area of Hong Kong. When sunlight passes through water droplets and gets reflected twice, two rainbows are developed. The primary rainbow, formed by one reflection, is brighter while the secondary rainbow, produced by two reflections, is fainter.

$2.20

Frost forms when water vapour freezes into ice crystals. When the surface temperature of an object falls below freezing point, frost appears. The stamp portrays frost formed on the surface of a plant in cold weather in Hong Kong. Frost is white and is usually found on the ground or exposed objects.

$2.90

A cloud is formed when water vapour rises through the atmosphere and cools. A cloud is a mass of water droplets or ice crystals formed by the cooling and condensation of the lifted water vapour aloft. The stamp shows lenticular clouds in the sky over an urban area of Hong Kong. As air rises on the lee side of a mountain, water vapour condenses into water droplets, which accumulate and develop into lenticular clouds, taking the shape of a pile of saucers or lenses.

image

$3.10

Lightning is an atmospheric electric discharge phenomenon. In an unstable and moist atmosphere, water droplets and ice pellets in clouds will become electrically charged in a convective motion. When the building up of charges reaches a certain threshold, discharges take place between clouds or between clouds and the earth’s surface. The stamp depicts cloud-to-ground lightning in the night sky of Hong Kong. Cloud-to-ground lightning, a lightning discharge between a cumulonimbus cloud and the ground, poses a greater threat to people and facilities on the ground.

$3.70

Fog refers to tiny suspended water droplets near the ground. Under light wind, and stable and humid conditions, when the air near the ground cools down sufficiently, the water vapour in the air condenses into tiny water droplets and fog is formed. The stamp pictures Lantau Island embedded in mist at dawn. In springtime, it is often foggy in Hong Kong and neighbouring areas as they are affected by alternate cold and warm air.

$5

Rain is a a natural phenomenon of precipitation. Water droplets in the clouds will come down as rain when they accumulate to a certain weight. The stamp features Chek Lap Kok Airport in the rain. When a moist and warm air parcel rises and condenses as cloud, a significant amount of latent heat will be released into the surrounding air, facilitating the uplift of the air. Further sucking up of humid air will promote the full development of a cumulonimbus and eventually bring torrential rain.

The USPS unveils Earth Day Stamp today !!

It's Earth Day !

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
