World Cancer Day  - 4th February

Here is a new stamp on medical theme. Algerian Post marked World Cancer Day with a new stamp issue. The stamp with an original design was released on the 4th of February.

World Cancer Day is marked on February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. The primary goal of the World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer by 2020.

World Cancer Day is a unique opportunity to raise awareness that there is much that can be done at an individual, community and governmental level, to harness and mobilize these solutions and catalyze positive change. By moving forward together we have the potential to show: Cancer. It is not beyond us.

Stamp on International year of solidarity with Palestinian people

Algerian Post issued a special stamp to celebrate the International year of solidarity with Palestinian people. The item was released on the 15th of December. In Algeria on occasion of this year a special festival is held annually. The Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika called on his people to extend their hands to help the Palestinian people as a “moral and human duty”.

The date of 29 November was chosen as the day of solidarity with Palestinian people because of its meaning and significance. On that day in 1947, the General Assembly adopted resolution 181 (II), which came to be known as the Partition Resolution. That resolution provided for the establishment in Palestine of a “Jewish State” and an “Arab State”, with Jerusalem as a corpus separatum under a special international regime. Of the two States to be created under this resolution, only one, Israel, has so far come into being as an independent and sovereign State.

The Solidarity Day has traditionally provided an opportunity for the international community to focus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine is still unresolved and that the Palestinian people is yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the General Assembly, namely, the right to self-determination without external interference, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and property from which they had been displaced.

The Serbian  stamps on the miniature sheet show year 2013 on stamps seems they were printed in 2013 .

The Serbian Post depicts Pirot carpet (kilim). It refers to a variety of flat tapestry-woven carpets or rugs traditionally produced in Pirot, a town in southeastern Serbia. Pirot kilims with some 122 ornaments and 96 different types have been protected by geographical indication in 2002. They are one of the most important traditional handicrafts in Serbia.

Algerian region has its own style of carpets. They differ in their patterns and colours but their compositions are quite similar. Generally, carpets are made with sheep wool, sometimes mixed with goat hair to get more robust thread. The stamp depicts the carpet produced in Kalâa Beni-Rached.

The main difference between a carpet and kilim is in their sizes, all larger than two meters weaving carpets are known and are used as ground cover, while the kilims are shorter and their uses are many.
